The Biden campaign has called for censorship of “disinformation” on social media after a clip of President Joe Biden’s suspected mental decline during the Group of Seven (G7) summit went viral.
Campaign spokeswoman Adrienne Elrod urged Big Tech platforms to remove or limit the footage’s distribution, telling MSNBC in an interview that “disinformation is alive and well.”
“Look, we’re [going to] see more of this. I mean, this is just the reality of campaigning in 2024 – so we have to combat that disinformation. We have to hit it hard when it happens and make it clear that these are dirty tactics that [Make America Great Again] Republicans are using, because they can’t run on the issues,” she said.
“We’re going to do what we can to combat it, but it does take the voices of surrogates across the country. It does take the media to call it out.”
The footage showed Biden awkwardly walking away from other world leaders as they posed for photos. The president took a few steps away while watching a skydiving display, seemingly unaware of what’s happening. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni then reached out to him, tapping his shoulder to take him back to the group.
Meanwhile, Elrod’s calls for censorship of alleged disinformation did not sit well with critics. They argued that such attempts to control media narratives through censorship are detrimental to public discourse. They also stressed the importance of transparency and the free exchange of ideas, even if they are unfavorable to those in power.
In a separate press conference, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre blasted Republicans for “deceptively editing” the video clip in a “misleading manner.” She called the viral clip at the G7 a “cheap-fake.”
“It tells you everything that we need to know how desperate Republicans are,” Jean-Pierre told reporters. She also claimed that Biden was moving to give a thumbs-up to the parachutists, before Meloni called his attention.
The White House also took issue at other viral clips that showed the Democratic incumbent’s mental decline. The second clip showed Biden motionless on stage during a Juneteenth celebration in the White House, as the people around him were dancing.
“The president stood there listening to the music, and he didn’t dance,” said Jean-Pierre. “Excuse me, I didn’t know that not dancing was a health issue.”
“That is a weird thing to actually flag. If you look at the people around him, there were some folks who were not dancing either.”
A third clip, taken during a fundraiser event led by former President Barack Obama in California, showed Biden also “freezing” on stage. This motionless episode went for seven seconds, until Obama led his former vice president off the stage. In response to this clip, White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates explained that Biden was waiting on the stage to appreciate the applause from his supporters.
Earlier in June, the Wall Street Journal published an article revealing Biden struggling to remember meetings from one day to the next, mixing up key details of his policies and, at times, speaking so softly that aides struggle to hear him.
