A former female volleyball player who is still grappling with the repercussions of a severe injury inflicted by a male-to-female (MTF) transgender player slams Democratic lawmakers for denying the fact that trans “women” in female sports cause harm.
During a recent meeting of the House Judiciary Committee on March 21, Democratic lawmakers disregarded the harms MTF athletes have caused among their biologically female peers. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) said “not a single” transgender individual was harming anyone.
As a response, Payton McNabb, a former high school volleyball player from North Carolina who suffered severe head and neck injuries after receiving a spike to the face from an MTF opponent during a volleyball game in 2022, took to X, formerly Twitter, to voice her disagreement.
“Just getting back from my second doctor appointment this week, a year and a half later, I’m definitely going to have to disagree,” McNabb tweeted. “My life is forever changed because of an injury by a boy. So yeah… men have harmed women in our sport. But as long as your feelings don’t get hurt, right?”
McNabb was injured when she was a 17-year-old junior. The injury rendered her unconscious for over 30 seconds immediately after she was hit, leaving her with a concussion. She also suffered from impaired vision, partial paralysis and memory gaps for the following year.
Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) added more fuel to the fire of the debate when he claimed that transgender women should be allowed to compete in women’s sports.
“Transgender women may compete in women’s sports, [but] it does no service to the truth or to the human biology or understanding of human biology that there’s no such thing as transgender women, or for that matter transgender men,” Nadler said. “We know that people did not ask to be born transgender; no more than [one] of us has to be born male or female, they were just born that way.”
In response to Nadler’s statement, McNabb responded: “Come on now, Jerry, you know that ain’t true. Everyone can see right through your delusion. Your statement is a slap in the face to every female athlete that has suffered from this insane issue.”
Advocates for inclusivity clash with critics who argue that such policies undermine the integrity of sex-specific athletics, especially in women’s competitions. Critics of trans inclusivity argue that it contradicts the original rationale for segregating sports by sex, depriving female athletes of recognition and opportunities and undermining their safety and privacy.
Recent years have seen numerous high-profile examples of transgender athletes, who were assigned male at birth, winning competitions in women’s categories. Critics point to research confirming physiological advantages that males retain, even with hormone suppression, giving them an edge over female competitors.
One such study from 2019 published in the Journal of Medical Ethics found that MTF athletes still possess significant physical advantages over their female counterparts.
The research, conducted by New Zealand bioethicists Taryn Knox and Lynley C. Anderson, along with psychologist Alison Heather, challenges prevailing narratives upheld by LGBT activists. It underscores that “transwomen” retain certain performance benefits derived from male biological characteristics, particularly heightened testosterone levels, despite hormone therapy.
Furthermore, the study contends that reducing testosterone levels in biological males does not eliminate inherent physical advantages. It argues that factors such as bone structure, muscle density and lung volume persist even after hormone therapy. These findings further contribute to an ongoing performance disparity between biological female athletes and male athletes pretending to be women.
“We conclude that the advantage to transwomen afforded by the IOC guidelines is an intolerable unfairness,” states the research abstract, which refers to the guidelines established by the International Olympic Committee.
